Quick and Easy Office Makeover

simple and quick office makeover

So last month for my Better Homes and Gardens sponsored post we gave my brother and his wife’s living room a makeover…

$1,000 living room makeover before and after

This month I am still between houses and have zero rooms that are ready for decor or organization…running water and locks on the doors trumps decor, every time. So I batted my eyelashes at Eric and Kelsey and asked them if they would let me use their house again. And they said yes, since they are under the impression that I’m doing them a favor, when really it’s the other way around. Suckers.

So this months theme is “small spaces”, and they chose to do the office.

6x8 office before

Their office is truly a small space, it’s about a 6X8 room right off the living and dining room area. It’s very hard to photograph…thank goodness there is a window. Here is a panoramic so you can kinda get a feel for it.

I think an office area this size is a great idea. Anything bigger is wasted square footage, but anything smaller and more out in the open (like a desk built into the kitchen area) basically becomes a catch-all. (Unless you are a super organized type A person, which I know I’m not and neither is my brother.)

Anyway, here is their quick and easy office makeover. It truly is quick and easy…the whole thing is completed in one afternoon. I feel like most of my rooms I’m like “Hey, look at this room I finally completed! It only took two years and approximately eight hundred man hours! Aren’t you inspired?” And it’s like “Ummm, no. Ain’t nobody got time for that.”

So here is what it looks like now…

They mostly used what they had and added some organization and decor. The shelves are stained pine 1X6 and brackets with some added books and pretties. To the left are some simple wire baskets for incoming and outgoing mail, and to the right is a magnet board for displaying notes and bills (because everyone knows that bills make the BEST decor).

Underneath are three galvanized bins for all the non-pretty paperwork and checkbooks and whatnot.

Right inside the doorway we added a full-length mirror for bouncing around light, a wall clock (so they don’t get caught up in all the bill-paying fun and forget about dinner), a plant in a lantern.

And that’s the tour! Isn’t it amazing what a few hours (and a deadline) can accomplish?

Nice work for an afternoon! Maybe when you get some more time add some colour to the wall behind the desk or some more of that fabulous wood you put up in the living room. Brava!

That was my thought…if they gave me a day alone with that office that wall behind the shelves would be unrecognizable. You literally can’t see it from anywhere else in the house and it’s the perfect place to get super creative.

Good use of a very small space! It may have been a small makeover but it made a big difference.

I have mail baskets in the wall in my kitchen and they work very well. These are actually from Walmart too, they just aren’t made by Better Homes and Gardens – http://www.walmart.com/ip/More-Inside-Large-Wire-Basket/22388183

Very fun transformation! Love how everything flows! Do you happen to know the source for their desk, Ashley? I have been looking for a wood desk with a glass too that has some character…Thanks!

I don’t, but let me ask Kelsey and get back to you. I’m pretty sure it’s an old hand-me-down though.

So Kelsey confirmed that it’s an old hand me down, she said she’s the third owner and has no idea where it came form. Sorry I can’t help!

You know what, I have no idea…I didn’t even notice that it wasn’t in there. Eric is kinda a techie guy so who knows where he put it. I can ask.

I asked my sister-in-law and she said it didn’t work so they currently don’t have one. When they do get one it will end up on the bottom shelf of the desk and the bins will flipped so it all fits.

I actually had nothing to do with this makeover, I just gave them the Walmart gift card and told them to have it done by my deadline. (They really are suckers, haha.)
