Southwestern Guest Room Reveal

Time for another reveal post! Can you tell I’m trying to tie up loose ends on this house before I completely move onto the next one? Although this room turned out so well that I think I’m just going to move it right into the next house and try to change as little as possible. Anyway, here it is!

beautiful rustic bedroom makeover

southwestern bedroom decorHere is what the room looked like previously…the one on the left is just after we bought it, and the on the right is after the first makeover.

Guest bedroom

bedroom with rock feature wall

This is by far my favorite room in the house. I think it came together really well and just feels like…well, me. Like home. I like it so much more than the master bathroom (my last reveal), which turned out great but (if we’re being honest) errs on the side of looking too juvenile.

Unlike the rest of the house, I chose a neutral paint for the walls and I think it really gave me freedom to do whatever I wanted in the room. There are a lot of neutrals in here for sure, but also lots of color. And I think the icing on the cake is the texture in the room. Overall it feels mature but not stuffy, which think matches my personality pretty well (if I may say so myself).

orange blue what and green

Also, the bed is wicked comfortable. Adam has a weird schedule so he sleeps in here a lot, since it’s the quietest room in the house (which really isn’t saying much.)

rustic bedroom

Here is a shot of the very plain, very boring, other side.

boring side

If you are a regular reader you may remember that my plan was for Adam and I to build double bypass sliding barn doors for this closet. Well, we did…and they were one of the biggest DIY fails to date. Also, they took forever and were kinda expensive. I’ll tell that story in my next post, it’s definitely one that needs telling.

Another thing I like about this room is the mixed metals. When I first started remodeling and decorating our house seven years ago, I thought all the metals had to match. I chose pewter for all the door hardware and from there out all metals had to be pewter. I eventually gave up on that because that is no fun at all, plus pewter is not easy to find. Lesson learned. In this room I chose three metals…bronze, gold, and galvanized, and they work well together because they are so different. Plus it makes the room feel like it was collected over time, which is always a good thing.

modern southwestern bedroom

The Airstone wall is really what makes the room though. Without that wall it would just be your standard nice guest bedroom, but nothing to write home about. Adding the stone gives it that wow factor and was completely worth all the time it took to install (which was mostly because I was super pregnant and everything hurt).

So that’s the tour! It feels so good to finally call these rooms finished!

I think the room looks really pulled together and beautiful, though I worry about that wall. I have read many comments about insect infestation within the blocks themselves. Mold also (though that probably isn’t a problem in your neck of the woods). Not to mention keeping it clean. Can you use a regular duster to get in the cracks and crevices? I feel like keeping the floors and flat surfaces clean is hard enough, I would hate a high maintenance wall. It would be a total sale killer if I were looking to buy a house. Maybe stone walls are more common in Texas though, and it would be a selling point.

Thanks Beth! Stone walls are very common here in Texas, and I’ve never heard of insects or mold being a problem (it’s pretty hot and dry). I don’t think of it as a high maintenance wall at all…..but admittedly my house isn’t the cleanest and a little dust on a textured wall doesn’t bother me in the least. I did clean it right before taking pictures, I just used the duster attachment on the vacuum and it only took a minute or two. I realize that some buyers will hate it, but I figured that if they don’t like the stone wall then they probably won’t like all the other quirkily things in my house and wouldn’t be interested anyway.

It turned out beautifully, it does look really “grown-up” but relaxed :) I LOVE the wall! Friends of ours bought an old townhouse and found beautiful limestone walls in the living room and hall that they’ve left exposed and I am sooooo jealous!
Can’t wait to hear about the barn doors, I was planning on attempting some to close off our laundry area but I’ll wait till I hear what you have to say before jumping in ;)

Over in Ireland y’all probably have some awesome stone (structural) walls…I love that! Ours area all fake. Well not fake, but they’re mostly decorative and not supporting anything. I have a limestone wall planned for our master bedroom and I’m super excited about it :) We also have five barn doors planned for the new house and we’re still doing that…but I will definitely NOT be DIYing the hardware.

I was thinking adobe brick/tile red for drapes but that may be going to far and gaudy. The light blue does give a sense of sky, simplicity and non genre mix.

Did you change out your ceiling fan or did you spray paint it? If you painted, what did you use? Thank you!

It’s a completely new fan. I thought about spray painting the old one, but instead just oped for a new (much quieter) fan.

The room is amazing. I love it! I have only one question … How is the stone wall when it comes to cleaning? I imagine it needs to be dusted (the one drawback to texture) on occasion. How easy/difficult is it?

I’ve only cleaned it once (about 10 minutes before taking these pictures) and used the duster attachment on the vacuum. It only took a couple of minutes and was super easy.

I love that room too but the biggest thing is the hanging lights next to the bed. I bought two of them and have been holding them because I didn’t know what to do with them. I DO now!!!!! Thanks so much!

I have loved the wall with the big map since you first posted it. I love that you didn’t just center the map over the shelves. The way you arranged everything is so interesting. Great job on this room! I can’t wait to see your new house come together!

I know I got the curtains from JC Penny (bought online) but I can’t remember any details other than that. I’ve bought all my curtains from JC penny (beside the ones I’ve made of course), they have great prices and sales…plus you can actually find longer panels.

Absolutely. . .inspiring! V-e-r-y well done!!
Just a thot to ponder on:
    * Airstone runs about $ 8 /sq ft + supplies. Not bad . . .but it ain’t free and budget-wise it may limit you to only one room.
    * Lower cost / similar impact alternative
    — Use the Airstone as a wainscot replacement (abt. 32″ from floor – assumes an 8′ ceiling).
    — Trim top with an attractive moulding
    — This covers more room for the dollar.
