How (not) to make saloon doors

Sometimes DIY projects around here turn out great. Sometimes they are giant failures. And sometimes they look great and are a failure at the same time. This is one of those projects. About five years ago I removed the closet door from my boy's room. Most people love doors on closets because you can hide the mess... I like closets not to have doors for the same reason. I know myself...hiding the mess is not a good thing. When I can hide a mess I HIDE A MESS. Things get crazy. It's …

“This is my beloved and this is my friend” Pallet Sign

Today I have a simple tutorial for y'all, the pallet sign that was in my master bedroom makeover last week. First thing you will need is a pallet, obviously. I know pallet projects have been all the rage lately, but I haven't ever really used them. Then one day Adam came across a stack of them behind his work and came home with these three. He called them "the most gorgeous pallets I've ever seen", since they were made from wood like red oak and pecan (or some equally nice …

Nightstand makeover in six easy steps!

Step one - buy a set nightstands off of Craigslist for $30. Use them for about two years without ever getting around to giving them the intended makeover. Step two - One day, when you're 41.5 weeks pregnant with your third child, decide you are tired of just sitting around waiting to have a baby. Drag nightstands out to front porch for painting. Instagram the occasion. Step three - sand, prime, paint, seal....you know the drill. Step four - cease nightstand work in order to …

Rustic Glam Wall Clock

For years now Adam and I have had this ridiculous bedtime routine. We put the kids to bed, and after that we pretty much just veg on the couch, snack, talk, and binge watching whatever we are currently binge watching on Netflix. Then comes that time where it's starting to get late, and Adam asks me "what time is it?" He's super responsible at bedtime and goes to sleep at a completely reasonable time....me not he other hand, not so much. When I'm not 38 weeks pregnant and exhausted I usually …

Kids Room Toy Shelf (an organized masterpiece)

Before I dive into all the DIY goodness I just wanted to say  thank you for all the love and support on my last post about Adam's accident. He is doing well, a little better every day. He is up and around the house now, and even getting out a bit. We don't do much...mostly just walk around slowly, taking turns moaning about how much moving hurts and telling the kids we can't pick them up. We're quite the pair these days! And now for our regularly scheduled post... I've mentioned this …

Mason Jar Pendant Light

You know those projects that should be really easy...the ones that should take you less than an hour but end up being a complete time suck and turn out NOTHING like you had planned? Yeah, me neither. Never happens. Except like every fourth project or so. I've been planning to hang pendants in the guest room instead of doing traditional bedside lamps. The room is pretty small and anywhere I can save space I will. Plus I'm certain my tomato cage side tables wouldn't …

Introducing Paint-A-Pillow + A Giveaway

Many of you know that Cutting Edge Stencils is a sponsor of Domestic Imperfection. It all started when I won one of their stencils in a giveaway and used it to create the paisley stenciled table, which became the project that got my blog off the ground. I have worked with Cutting Edge ever since (almost three years!), they are a fantastic company and my biggest cheerleader. So recently Cutting Edge launched a new company called Paint-A-Pillow. I know this is going to come as a surprise, …

DIY Gold Sunburst Mirror

Ever since I started remodeling the guest room I've known exactly what I wanted to put above the bed....a wooden pallet sign with a song verse on it. More specifically, the beautiful and terrifying chorus from Oceans by Hillsong ... Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders Let me walk upon the waters Wherever You would call me Take me deeper than my feet could ever wander And my faith will be made stronger In the presence of my Savior But as soon as the stone wall went up that …

Rustic Christmas Art

It's hard to believe that Christmas is only a few weeks away...where did time go? If it wasn't getting dark crazy early and making me feel like I'm cooking dinner at midnight I almost wouldn't believe it. Today I have a simple Christmas craft to share with you. It's the only one I have planned for the year because I'm not one of those organized bloggers that's good a planning ahead. Also, I'm busy turning food into a human...that's a legitimate excuse, right? It feels legitimate to me. Here …

Tomato Cage Tables

Sometimes I get the itch to try a project just for the heck of it. Even if I think it will fail, or look horrid, or be a total time-suck...I just want to give it a shot. These tables are one of those projects. I've been wanting to bring some gold into the house somehow, and I figured guest room bedside tables would be a great way to do that. The first thing that popped into my head was a gold wire table, mostly because I've seen them all over the internet (Pinterest) and they are stuck in my …

Upcycled Giant Chalkboard

A couple of years ago I made a chalkboard for my kitchen/dining room area. I use it every single day for my household to-do list. It's probably one of the things in my house I use most (that's not an appliance, computer, or sink). Recently the boys have taken an interest in it, and each day they drag their little step stool over to the chalkboard and go to town writing all over my list. I let them too, because seeing their little doodles and chicken scratch letters is way better than …

$30 Giant Map Decor

Remember this big Texas map? It only cost me about $30 to make. It wasn't some once in a lifetime garage sale, antique store, or curbside find either...I'm can tell you exactly how to make it for the same price. Adam and I made it about four years ago (pre-blog) for above our sofa, and it's been hanging there until I recently moved it to the guest room. So the first thing I have to share is where we got the map. It's from a government website, the Texas General Land Office, which happens …

A Completed Wall + Office Organization

This is my first post with the BHG Live Better Network, and the challenge for October is to get your home "holiday ready" using Better Homes and Gardens products. Now, by that I'm pretty sure they meant holiday decor, but I'm not much of a seasonal decorator and to me "holiday ready" means getting the guest room ready for holiday guests. So I've been chipping away at the to-do list, and am excited to show you my completed wall! As a reminder, this is what the room looked like earlier …

Easy Fall Wreath

According to the calendar summer is over and fall is upon us. Although Texas has cooled down a bit (thank goodness), it's still summer here. It's hot, everyone is in shorts and flip-flops, and I haven't seen a single colorful leaf or consumed anything pumpkin flavored. We even went to the beach this weekend. And while enjoy living in a state with endless summers, I'm ready for fall. I want to wear a sweater, sip hot coco in front of a fire, and jump watch my kids jump in a pile of leaves. But …

Sewing a Euro Sham Pillow with Flanges

Today I have a simple tutorial to share... A couple of weeks ago I showed you the new bedding for my southwestern guest room, and today I'm going to show you how to make the euro sham pillows. (Those are the big orange ones in the back BTW, I know different people call them different things.) Euro shams are generally large square pillows, usually 26 x 26 or 28 x 28. They are really simple to make, and if your a beginner you can totally do this. I know that because I'm a beginner...I've …

Nursery Sign Semi Success

So the saga of the nursery sign for my nephew continues.  Two weeks ago I posted about my first attempt at a name sign for baby Chandler, and I ended up with a sign that was wasn't bad, but also wasn't my favorite. And then there was the fact that I couldn't bring myself to give it to my SIL because it was over eight feet long and completely ridiculous. So I decided to try again. For the first sign I used the 12 inch letter stencils from Cutting Edge Stencils, in all different designs. I …

Nursery Sign Semi Fail

I mentioned in a previous post that my sister-in-law recently had a baby, little Chandler. Less than two years ago his older sister was born, and I made her this name sign out of an old section of fence and lots and lots of buttons. (tutorial here) I can't very well make Mallory a sign and not Chandler, so I did a little brainstorming on how I could make one without spending days gluing buttons. Buttons would be fine if his name was Bob or TJ or something, but "Chandler" in buttons …

Rustic Glam Foyer Light

A couple of weeks ago Adam and I made this light fixture for our front porch... We actually made two that day, the second was left plain (no frosted glass or metal) and was for the entryway. I wanted the two fixtures to be the same, but different. Like fraternal light fixture twins. I was hoping that my second born light would be a little less like a tomboy, and a little more like a chandelier. If you want a full tutorial on how to make this light, GO HERE. Here's is the CliffsNotes …

DIY Mixed Material Light Fixture

This post brought to you by Elmer’s ProBond Advanced. All opinions are 100% mine.. Happy second day of Spring! That might not mean a lot to me here in South Texas (where it's basically sunny all the time), but for all you northerners...this is big stuff. I lived in Northern New York for nearly six years, and that day that you can dash from your house to your car without wanting to DIE of frostbite...well, that's a good dang day. This spring I have plans for a few outdoor projects, the first …

How to Make Book Slings

If this sounds oddly familiar to you, it's because I've already done (and blogged about) this project. I made my first set of book slings a few years ago while pregnant with boy #2, but I'm going to throw it out there again since 98% of my current readers probably haven't seen that post. Plus these slings have been really great... I mean, we're renovating the room and these are the only things that are staying. So here is the new set.... and here is the old one. I made this new set all …
