Breezeway Makeover and Family Dinners: No Excuses Edition

For years now Adam and I have said we should start hosting big family dinners at our house once a month, and for years now we have come up with excuses not to. Either we were too busy, or the old house was too crowded, or the new house was too unfinished, or a variety of other things.  We ran out of excuses after laying sod a few weeks ago though, and decided that Mothers Day weekend is going to be the start of a new tradition. Once a month, every month, we will have a giant potluck and hang out with the people we love most.

So we’ve spent the last few days cleaning off the breezeway… pressure washing, staining tables, painting siding and generally making things pretty. It desperately needed it too, because no one wanted to hang out on it the way its been looking.

Is it completely finished? No, not at all. We’re still missing siding and trim, and where there could be a beautiful chandelier or useful fan we instead have dangling wires.

Also, our immediate family is about 25 people but we currently only have seating for eight. I’m thinking some folding tables and chairs out on the lawn should do the trick….no excuses, right?

My dad built the picnic table for us when we bought our property and it is the heaviest, sturdiest thing you will ever sit on. My dad doesn’t mess around when it comes to building things, he is all about function and durability. I added these wicker chairs to each end though, because while I like function and durability, what I really like is pretty things with curvy lines and texture.

  1. I am loving the water fountain! That is tenuous and I don’t think I would have ever thought to put one in a residential home! But with all of those boys I’m sure that thing cuts down on some serious cup usuage!

      1. Thank you, it’s a lifesaver! I can take zero credit for it though…it was Adam’s idea, my parents bought it, and my plumber brother-in-law installed it.

  2. That table is amazing! You are lucky to have such a handy and thoughtful dad! Love the idea of a casual potluck each month, let us know how it goes!

  3. Such a great idea to gather with loved ones monthly to share food and make memories!! I know it will make you and HH happy to see your vision for the space finally come full circle to having your entire family enjoy the beautiful space! Well done ;-D

    Happy Mother’s Day!!!

  4. It’s coming right along. Maybe if you had everyone bring their own fold-up chairs, you could get enough seating. Some people don’t need a table to sit at to eat…just sit it on their lap. Add maybe a few side tables (made from overturned large flower pots, or fashioned from some other components) for drinks, and you’re good to go! You’ll figure it out! Have fun!

  5. You are so right about not waiting till things are perfect, JUST DO IT!
Everything looks great and your family will enjoy making the memories, you can always look back on them and laugh!

  6. Absolutely beautiful… is the metal-framed unit with raw wood edge shelves from the hands of your talented husband or is it something I could hope to find in a shop…

  7. Your breezeway is AWESOME! I absolutely love it. I think I will be spending hours and hours in the shade of it, enjoying the breeze, the outdoors, and joining into my grandsons playing. It is my favorite part of your house. Dirty or organized, it is my ” go to place”.

  8. Walmart makes me angry every other time I shop there but the BH&G collection is great. Everything I’ve bought (including live flowers) have been great. Thanks for the giveaway!
