Nightstand makeover in six easy steps!

Step one – buy a set nightstands off of Craigslist for $30. Use them for about two years without ever getting around to giving them the intended makeover.

Step two – One day, when you’re 41.5 weeks pregnant with your third child, decide you are tired of just sitting around waiting to have a baby. Drag nightstands out to front porch for painting. Instagram the occasion.

Step three – sand, prime, paint, seal….you know the drill.

Step four – cease nightstand work in order to give birth to a squishy adorable baby boy.

Step five – come home from hospital and have the husband finish the nightstands while you breastfeed around the clock.

(me breastfeeding, not the husband..though that would be really really helpful)

Step six– step back admire your/your husbands handiwork.

Hale Navy nightstands

See, easy right? Next week I’ll show you exactly what I did with them. Also, the color is Hale Navy from Benjamin Moore…but since I’ve never actually seen a Benjamin Moore store in real life I had it color matched at Sherwin Williams.

  3. Love the nightstands and especially the squishy baby boy!

  4. My favorite picture and work of art is your squishy baby boy. But, I do really like the nightstands too. I too am a mother of three boys-they are a lot of FUN!

  6. The nightstands are beautiful but do not compare to that beautiful squishy baby boy!

  7. Look how shiny that finish is!!! i am a DIY beginner and never used SW, but it looks like an awesome paint!!

  8. Congratulations! What a beautiful squishy baby boy!! What’s his name? In September I get a squishy baby girl! Well, not me exactly, my granddaughter gets her but she is going to be MINE!!!!! LOL

  9. Fabulous job on the night stands, and HUGE congratulations on the safe arrival of the new baby. It’s a wonder he didn’t come out waving a paint brush in the air, lol.

    Have a great Easter weekend.

  10. Congratulations, your son is gorgeous and so are the night stands. My favorite color is blue so those have really inspired me to do something similar in my own house.

In your photo they look almost periwinkle, but I know this color well – this is a trim color on my home and I just love it!! I like to think of it as a navy that is greyed. I got it partly because this color is in our brick, but also could not resist the name – we are a Navy/Marine family. It wears well, too, even in the hot intense sun here above Denver.

    • I was thinking the same thing when I was uploading the photos, that they almost looks purple. They certainly don’t look purple in real life, it’s a great navy! My kitchen cabinets need repainting and I’m considering using this navy instead of the one thats currently on them.

Maybe stormy blue is a better description than greyed. I think cabinets in a kitchen would look great in this color. It also goes well with a creamy color and and ochre – kind of goldish, not metallic. And a barn red, too – that is the color of my front door. Hale Navy is a very versatile color, actually. I like color, and these do not overwhelm either me or the house.

  12. I would not have thought part paint part natural would work but here it looks great. The paint color gives a metallic look which illusions of mixed material works well too.

Good Job =) you and the husband.

how “the husband” could help with breastfeeding… I am
sure you would never work another day in your life .

  14. funny story, cute baby, fabulous nightstands both before and after!
    enjoy them all,

  17. Congratulations on your sweet little boy! I only have one (…ahem, for now…), and there is nothing like it!!

Just wondering- do you use pieces that are solid wood only, or is veneer okay as long as you plan to just paint/seal over it (as opposed to re-staining)? I’m new to the DIY, so any advice would be appreciated!!! :)

    • Thank you! There really is nothing like it. Its been a while since I’ve had a newborn and they are just so sweet and snuggly.

As for furniture, I prefer solid wood that is well made (dovetail joints instead of staples, etc) but anything works if you are just going to paint it. These nightstands are solid wood except for the top, which is laminate. After you paint it no one knows the difference!

  18. Love! Hubby did a great job! And that is an absolutely beautiful baby!! Congrats! I love babies…had five boys myself, and adopted my two nieces ;) Yeah, I’m done…lol

I have the matching desk to these nightstands of yours, and I have also seen the matching dresser at a thrift store in GA on another blog (except that blog post was like 4 or so years old). I would love to find the entire set. I love it! I love MCM in general and I always enjoy painting them! Here is a link to the matching desk I painted. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10206694843360605&set=pcb.902464966476444&type=1&theater

You may have to click through the pics to see the desk. I had several items posted ;)

  20. hey there! what do you use to seal after painting?

    thanks!!

  21. I had a question about color matching. Usually they say you need the paint swatch but if you never went into a Ben Moore store how did you get them? I’ve tried to get walmart to color match but they need the actual swatch and sometimes it’s impossible to do. Thx. Btw..table are awesome!

    • Hey Bonnie! I didn’t need a paint swatch, Sherwin Williams (or was Home Depot?) already had the formula in their system. I’ve actually never needed a paint swatch to get a color made at a different store, but I’ve never tried to do it at WalMart either.
