End Table? Dog House? Both!

Remember when I gave this old 70’s table a makeover?

70s table makeover

Well, that table has an ugly step-sister that I never told you about…

I decided that I didn’t want to put this one in my house, so it has just been hanging around in the furniture pile on my front porch. So when my (one day) sister-in-law said she needed a large end table, I jumped on the opportunity to get it out of my pile.

By now, I’m sure y’all know how this process goes…sand, paint…blah, blah, blah. But this time, while I was sanding, I had an idea. Elijah was crawling around in the table having a grand ‘ol time…

…and then it hit me…dog bed! My sister-in-law wanted to get a small dog anyway, so this would be perfect.  So I proceeded to paint the table turquoise to match the paisley table I had given her (Hallowed Hush by Behr) and then paint the inside a light tan (Gobi Desert by Behr).

Then I, of course, had to stencil the top.  I won a Cutting Edge Stencil giveaway awhile a while ago and wanted to try out one that I hadn’t used yet. This is the Nagoya craft sized stencil…and just as a tip, the craft sized stencils are half the price of the regular ones, and you can still do all the same stuff. A wall will take quite a bit longer, but a tabletop works great!

Next I gave it the Dirty Cowboy treatment and a coat of polyacrylic sealer.

Then, to make it irresistible to my scruffy little mutt, I threw her dog bed inside…voila, a dog bed end table!

And you know what….Pretzel liked it!

Honestly though, the only thing that makes this a dog bed/end table combo is the fact that I took the door off, painted the inside, and stuffed my dog in it. To make it into a regular end table, all you have to do is put the door back on.

But really, y’all thought I was more creative when it had a dog in it, right? This would be really easy to make yourself, all you have to do is find the right kind of end table (and the right size dog.)

  3. That’s so cute! It’s a great idea to put the pet bed inside a regular piece of furniture…however, my dog would maybe be able to get his head in. ;)

  4. It would make a great place to hide a litter box as well. I have been looking for something like that to hide the litter box at my daughters house.

  7. Genius! I love the makeover, but more than that I love its ability to hide the dog bed! I’m so sick of tripping over ours! Your end table makes the perfect home and Fido’s nest can still be in the family room where all the action is… He won’t miss a thing! Thanks for sharing!

  10. Let me just say, I am thouroughly impressed. Those side tables *were* hideous before you painted them and I would’ve never thought to make a dog hide-away out of one. How creative!! Would you please link this up at my blog also? The party’s called Making Space Mondays.

    1. Oh she’s not mistreated, she just runs around in our (very wild) yard all day so of course she’s going to be a little dirty. She still sleeps in a plush bed at night and gets plenty of food and water, just not as many baths.

  14. I LOVE this! Too bad my Great Danes wouldn’t fit. My cats, on the other hand, will fit quite nicely.

  15. So now I’m pretty sure I will need to trade in my dog (shepherd) for a smaller model so as to have a need for this table. Anyone wanna trade?

    1. I don’t really worry about it honestly. I sand them the best I can (which isn’t that well) and then just prime and paint. I haven’t had a problem to date, so I say don’t let ornate stuff scare you :)

  16. Love your house and enjoy all your creative ideas! What color is the end table paint? Do you recomend any brand of paint? Do you brush or spray? Def going to try the dirty cowboy thing! Thanks for sharing!

    1. The paint on the end table is Hallowed Hush by Behr, but I don’t think they make it anymore. I mostly use Behr (Home Depot) because it’s the close to my house, But Sherwin Williams, Valspar (Lowes) and Benjamin Moore are great too. The only paint I haven’t liked was Glidden because it didn’t seem to have great coverage. I brush almost all my furniture, I’ve found that using spray paint on anything with a large flat surface is really difficult . I always use spray paint on things that are “spindly” (like chairs) though.

  17. Is this indoor or outdoor? I like it but outside you would have to make sure it’s NOT on level ground so water doesn’t pool at the top, and I have two 100 pound dogs so may be a little cramped for mine.

  18. This is a fantastic idea! To combine the use of an end table and a cozy place for your dog is just sublime. I have also done this with an old end table we received from our neighbors when they moved. I thought I’d never have use for the old laminate table but alas, it looks like a brand new table now! And our dog Scout is looking forward to his new hideaway.

One quick question. I primed and painted it, and waited the 48 hours as suggested on the paint can. I also used some metallic gold spray paint to revamp the old bronze handles. Do you think it’s safe for Scout to sleep in it yet? I don’t want any lingering paint/spray paint fumes causing him to get sick.

  19. Hi, The fact that the Sphynx is a hairless cat is only a small part of why we are Sphynx lovers. Sphynx cats and Sphynx kittens have very unique personalities. I really do not consider myself an owner of Sphynx cats, because really, my Sphynx cats and Sphynx kittens own me! Sphynx cats and Sphynx kittens love their owners unconditionally. The Sphynx has so much love to give and is willing to love anyone that will allow them into their lives.Sphynx Cats

  21. Oh, I am sorry you felt that way at the concert! I completely sympathise because it happens to me sometimes too, and just last week a fellow PhD student almost fainted while delivering a paper. Not fun, nope.

Also, if it is any consolation, I once managed to put the cat’s medicine in my cup instead of hers. Well, thank goodness I realised that :p.dog breeds

  23. Wonderful!!!! My husband was skeptical but this changed his mind. We had to use a little gas grill so we wanted something that cooked quickly. This worked great! I didn’t have time to make pico de gallo so I drained some Rotel with the same ingredients (lime, cilantro, etc) and used it. Worked great! Thank you so much for sharing this! 29. As a groomer myself, I am always happy to spend 5-10 min showing a dog owner some at home care tips to prolong time in between grooms. If you do want to try clipping your dog yourself remember that there are real dangers to grooming. If you aren’t 100% comfortable when using sharp objects on the dog, the dog will sense that and be more jumpy & wiggly. staffie

  30. We run with our dogs – I usually run with my German Shorthaired Pointer Rosemary and my husband runs with our Viszla Sage. Rosie is almost eight and I have ran off lead with her for about six years. She is old enough to know not to start out at a sprint ???? She loves the fall weather right now and usually is a few steps ahead of me. But being a good puppy, she knows to slow down at streets or if people are coming. But I think it is the main point that how I maintain the health of dog. In this method CBD For Pets is very important. By the way great share. You article provides a lots of information.
