Laundry Room Before and After
I love (LOVE!) before and after pictures. Our laundry room is the only room that is pretty much complete and I feel good about posting an ‘after’ picture. First, the before…
The first thing to go was that awful paint color. I painted it a muted green, same as in our living room and guest/kids bath. Next, the cabinets. This isn’t our forever house so everything has to be done as cheaply as possible…Which means no new cabinets. I wanted them to look custom and unique so I painted them white, removed the cabinet door inset thingy and replaced it with chicken wire.
Next, our craigslist washer and dryer happen to be (probably the first ever) front loading. I saw in a DIY magazine once a counter over the washer/dryer used for folding a loved the idea. I wanted to counter to be unique (of course!) and couldn’t decide on what to use. I had the idea to use an old door laid sideways – and even found a door – but it ended up not working out. Then I decided to use cedar and gathered up the husband for a Home Depot trip…turns out that was going to be too expensive. What we ended up doing was using scraps from the flooring we installed (more on that later) in our living room and scraps from the trim and baseboards we are installing.
Since our washer and dryer are ummm….not pretty…I wanted to hide them. I ended up using electrical conduit and installing it under the counter and then sewing some curtains.
We also replaced the light fixture (and painted the ceiling, because of course those we pink/salmon as well.) We found it on clearance at Home Depot.
The finished product is beautiful AND functional. Here is the before and the after for easy comparison.
Overall, the total cost was roughly $130. Isn’t it crazy what you can do with a little money and a lot of creativity?!?!

You are very creative. The electrical conduit as a rod is genius. I am a fan of the chicken wire, scrap wood counter and your new trim style too. A little goes a long way in home transformation when you think outside the box. Great job.
Wow! It looks fantastic!

Wow, you have achieved wonderful results on such a small budget. This is one of my next rooms to tackle- I am inspired.
Wow, wish my laundry room could look this good. Great idea “hiding” ugly washer and dryer under counter. I think I'm gonna use this idea in mine. Thanks for posting!

Thanks for your wonderful Creative Creation!!!

Looks awesome! I love the creativity with the countertop and I think it looks better than the cedar would have! And the fabric is great – well done!
This looks absolutely amazing! I'm featuring it on today's link party. And I'm pretty sure that the fabric that you used on the skirt is the exact same fabric that I've been wanting to purchase (for months now) for the draperies in my bedroom.
Came over from Shabby Nest, what a great makeover – looks a million times better than before.

Hi! I saw your post when it was featured from the blog party “Sunday Showcase”. I bought the material to do a “skirt” in my laundry room over a year ago…it's still on the roll. You have inspired me to get going! I am following you now.
What a great transformation! Love it!
Quite simply… I ♥ your chicken mesh fronted cabinets =)
I really like the counter top. So rich and warm. Good ideas!
Love the chicken wire cabinets! What a brilliant idea!
This is so beautiful! I LOVE the counter and hiding the appliances behind curtains to soften the space. I think you've added another project to my to-do list! :)
Love the counter…awesome idea using the scraps from flooring!
Hi,
I just started to follow your blog. I love your laundry room makeover. I was wondering if you would mind sharing where you got your fabric for the curtains covering your washer and dryer. I love it! I have been looking for fabric to make curtains for my living room and that fabric would be perfect. Thanks.
Hi Cindy! I found the fabric at Joann's in the home decor fabric section. I want to say it's by Better Homes and Gardens, but don't quote me on that. I hope you see my response here, your e-mail isn't enabled on your account so I couldn't e-mail you directly. Thanks for becoming a follower!
Wow, I love the chicken wire cabinets, but mostly I love the countertop. It's brilliant!
Looks fantastic. Thanks for sharing.
That looks amazing! I am super jealous. I do laundry in my cruddy basement.
Love this! We have a front loader, but the buttons are at the top and not on the front of the machine, so I don’t think this would work in our house until we had a new washer. Great ideas!
Countertop!!! I love it! Can you provide more details on how you made it?
